Dissertation: Population Change and Social Mobility in South Korea

Abstract
Korea experienced dramatic fertility decline since the 1960s. This rapid fertility decline arouses public concerns about the lack of labor supply and insufficient support for the elderly in the near future. In this dissertation, I examine the trend of fertility change, the influence of socioeconomic differentials in fertility on the fertility decline, and the implications of socioeconomic differentials for the intergenerational transmission of socioeconomic status. First, I compare period measures, cohort measures, and ‘cross-sectional average’ measures to study the tempo and quantum of fertility change in Korea. Using both aggregate and survey data, I examine the changing patterns of marriage and childbearing. Second, I examine the educational differentials in the timing of marriage and childbearing by using survival analysis. Using decomposition techniques, I evaluate the importance of compositional change and associational change for the fertility decline. Finally, I examine the implications of differential fertility for the population renewal process. Using population renewal models, I examine the implications of differential demographic behaviors and social mobility for the future population distribution. Overall, this examination will contribute to the understanding of fertility decline in Korea. More generally, this will help to understand the interaction between demographic processes and social inequality.
